The New York Bridal Fashion week was held a couple of weeks ago & I thought I’d share a few of the bridal hip & happenings from that side of the globe. Here are a few of my favourites:
1. Low backs:
Sexy seems to be making its way into bridal wear as seen in many of the collections which have graced the ramp. It is also a request I have been receiving more & more from brides visiting my studio. I have also noted quite a few one shoulder designs featuring a sheer tulle strap, embellished with lace or diamante motifs. If you are planning a destination wedding it could make for an interesting feature to an otherwise simple silhouette & design.
2. Gorgeous Lace:
Can lace ever loose its quality to add that extra something special to a wedding dress? The beauty of lace is that it can be added as small, minimalist accents or be done on mass – it all depends on your taste & your heart’s desire. It can also determine the ‘feel’ of your wedding dress e.g. Vintage, Modern, Romantic, Classic etc.
3. Statement head pieces & veils:
Gone are the days of the traditional veil. Instead, brides can now choose from modern tulle embellished headbands to fascinators…and everything else in between. One of my personal favourites (which I have done for a bride in September before I even knew it was fashionable) is a border of appliquéd lace motifs (matching that on her dress) around the bottom edge of the veil. Fascinators add nostalgic fun or a vintage touch to a wedding dress.
4. Pops of colour:
Colour has been making a come-back into bridal fashion over the past couple of years. Vera Wang was one of the first to break the mould by adding black sashes to her beautifully designed wedding dresses. Colours that featured widely this year were Blush, Pink & Gold.
Layers are always beautiful & it adds a touch of whimsy to any wedding dress – be it floating layers of chiffon (fit for a Natural bride) or layers of tulle (fit for a Romantic / Dramatic bride). Layered tulle was seen in many designers’ ranges such as Ravini & Marchesa.
6. Strong & powerful designs:
Modern designs ranging from sexy, boldly sophisticated, confident & independent to sleek and chick.
Other trends that featured strongly were:
– Elaborate embellishments
– Old Hollywood glam
– Garden inspired designs such as that of Monique Lhuillier
Some of my favourite designers are: Monique Lhuillier, Anne Barge, Jenny Packham , Claire Pettibone & of course Vera Wang
