This stunning evening dress was made for Daniela, a matriculant at Whykeham Collegiate in Pietermaritzburg, KZN. Daniela drew inspiration for this design from the red carpet & procedure with the challenge of making her dream dress a reality.
Even though the design seemed simple, it was the fabric print that was the key feature of her dress. The original design was made from an embroidered fabric & in order to give my interpretation of Daniela’s dress its own unique signature, I opted to have the fabric printed.
This process involved a textile designer designing the artwork for printing, purchasing the correct amount of fabric required (plus a little extra to allow for pattern matching etc.) and finding a suitable printer for the job. Thanks to ending up with the correct service providers (in the end) the fabric was ready for me to execute the designing & making by end Feb.
Cutting the dress was the other super important part in the making of this dress, as the little ‘squiggle’ in the middle of the main part of the design had to be matched up perfectly at the back & placed at exactly the right position in the front. In order to accomplish this, I traced part of the pattern onto pattern Vilene & pinned it in place during a toille fitting. Then I transferred this onto the actual pattern before cutting (also traced onto pattern Vilene) & matched my traced designs to that of the actual fabric.
The result: a perfectly matched CB seam & and perfectly positioned ‘squiggle’ on the front of the dress.
It was such a lovely & rewarding experience making Daniela’s dress dreams come true.
